In recent years, the number of applications of Biological control methods for controlling crop-damaging pests has been increased in order to inhibit the use of chemical pesticides which aggravates environmental pollution and hazards the health and safety of farmers and consumers. The use of Coccinellidae family predatory insects has recently been one of the most popular biological control methods especially for controlling populations of aphids. The predator Harmonía axyridis (Pallas 1773) (Coleóptera: Coccinellidae) indigenous insect of South-East Asia was introduced in Greece in 1994 to be used as biological control agent into crops infested by aphids. Testing its action was necessary in order to determine whether this insect is able to be used in integrated pest management (I.P.M.) programs. In present assay, the demographic factors of Harmonía axyridis in comparison with four indigenous predatory species were studied. In particular, the average reproduction ability as well as the endogenous rates of increasing of three populations of H. axyridis (one from Greece and two from England) compared with the equivalent values of the indigenous Coccinella septempunctata, Hippodamia undecimnotata, H. variegate and Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (Coleóptera: Coccinellidae) were measured. The experiments took place under standard conditions of temperature (25±1) and relative humidity (65%) using colonies of the aphids Aphis fabae and Dysaphis crataegi. The results indicated intense action of H. axyridis to such an extent that probably inhibits the action and the development of populations of other Predatory Coccinellidae species. Such problems have also occurred in other countries where the insect was introduced. Further research of the action and importance of Harmonía axyridis is considered to be necessary in order ascertain that this insect can be used as biological control agent for controlling aphids. |
